Mainland Sand & Gravel is a COR company.
COR (Certificate of Recognition) is an initiative that recognizes and rewards employers who go beyond the
legal requirements of the Workers Compensation Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation by
taking a best practices approach to implementing health, safety and return-to-work programs. The program
promotes the concept of managing health and safety equally with other components necessary for a
successful business, such as profitability and productivity.
In 2013, Mainland received a Chief Inspector’s Recognition award. This is a discretionary merit based award, only presented when and where a mine and/or an individual have accomplished outstanding achievements in health and safety at mine sites. Mainland received this award for our exemplary health and safety program – in which we “walk the talk”.
Mainland was also the co-recipient of the 2013 Stewart O'Brien Safety Award. The award is to recognize mining companies in B.C. that have had the lowest LTA (loss time accident) frequency in the 35,000 – 200,000 worker hour's category.
Mainland Sand and Gravel is committed to the safety and health of our employees and all others who enter onto property where we work. Safety is our first priority – before production; before quality; and certainly before profits. Our family does not want anyone to take any safety shortcut to increase our profitability. There is no function we perform that will ever be so urgent or important that we cannot take the time to do it safely.
Sending people home safely at the end of a work shift/day is a common goal of all that work for Mainland Sand and Gravel. Accomplishing this goal requires that management and supervisors will evaluate risks – eliminate them where practical, and provide appropriate equipment and training to affected workers to cope with those risks which remain. It also requires that every employee take personal responsibility to know the hazards of their jobs, to know the approved procedures to perform hazardous tasks and to use those procedures and appropriate safety equipment.
Adherence to Mainland’s safety standards and procedures is a condition of employment. Every person we employ is required to commit to working at all times in ways which will prevent harm to themselves, their fellow workers and the public. Employees must not hesitate to report unsafe practices or conditions. Managers and supervisors are expected to be vigilant in ensuring compliance with all aspects of our safety requirements.

The key points of the company’s environmental strategy to achieve this are:
- We will minimise toxic emissions through the use of our equipment and when selecting replacement equipment.
- We will minimise waste by evaluating operations and ensuring our operations are as efficient as possible.
- We will actively promote recycling both internally and with our suppliers.
- We will meet the environmental legislation that relates to our company.
